How to Get Started with Affirmations

Affirmations are all about looking for positive things in ourselves and the world around us and focusing our thoughts on them. We all probably know someone in our lives that always seems to have a little black cloud hanging over them. That person that is always talking about the things that are wrong in their lives and the world in general. Or, maybe that person is you? Think about the things you complain about. They are all probably legitimate concerns. However, try thinking about the things in your life that you know are positive. I bet you can think of a number of those now that you are looking for them.

The Power of Thought

Our thoughts can trap us or free us. What we focus our thoughts on is what our reality becomes. This is an incredibly powerful thing and can also be difficult to redirect if you have been stuck in a negative thought pattern for a while. Negative thoughts can’t necessarily cause bad things to happen to you, but they can block you from being able to see other positive options. Negative thoughts can also stop you from taking the risk of trying something different to improve your situation. Doubt and fear can paralyze you and make you believe you can’t do better or even that you don’t deserve better. If that is where you are then it is time to stop the negative and start focusing on positive affirmations.

To change your reality you have to change your thoughts. Holding onto and repeating positive affirmations in your consciousness will combat the negative thoughts and self-doubt. Even if you don’t believe the affirmations at first, keep repeating them and focusing on them. Eventually they will become your new reality and you will start to see positive things happening in your life.

“Whatever You Feed Grows!”

The old saying about whatever you feed is what grows is true. If you feed your negative thoughts and starve your positive ones, then your negative thoughts will just grow and grow until you can’t even hear the positive any more. You can change this though, but the only way to do it is to start feeding your positive thoughts with affirmations. It won’t be easy at first because your positive thoughts are weak and your negative ones are very strong, but don’t give up. Gradually the affirmations will come easier and your positive thoughts will get stronger.

Controlling Your Reactions

Our thoughts also control our reactions to our life experiences. If you are stuck in a negative thought pattern, then everything that goes wrong in a given day becomes much worse and more difficult when added to all the other negativity in your life. On the other hand, if you are focusing your thoughts on the positive, then, when something goes wrong, it doesn’t become overwhelming and you are able to find solutions and overcome whatever it is.

When learning to practice affirmations it can be helpful to have objects that serve as reminders. In my life I have used a number of items as affirmations like:

  • Jewelry
  • Stones
  • Crystals
  • Pictures
  • Writing on the bathroom mirror!

Choose something that represents positivity or that reminds you of the positive things in your life. And, as you start on your journey of positive affirmations, remember that it takes 30 – 90 days to create a new habit – so just try it. Your first positive thought can be a reminder to yourself that you can really do this!
